The Difference Between Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

What is Alcohol Abuse?
Different from alcoholism, alcohol abuse is the misuse or overuse of alcohol to the detriment of relationships, family life, work and finances.

What is Alcoholism?
Alcoholism is alcohol abuse taken a step further. It is defined by craving alcoholic drinks, a loss of control when drinking, physical dependence upon alcohol and the exhibition of withdrawal symptoms when drinking stops, and a high tolerance to alcohol.

Is Alcoholism a Disease?
Yes. Alcoholism is a disease, and alcohol abuse is the precursor to that disease. The craving for alcohol is as strong as the natural need for food. It is a chronic disease, meaning that it is a constant issue for an alcoholic even when that person is sober. It lasts for a lifetime, it has symptoms and it is treatable but not curable. The risk for developing alcoholism, like other diseases, is greater for those with a family history as well as those with a high exposure to alcohol.

Why is There No Cure For Alcohol Abuse or Alcoholism?
There is no cure for alcohol abuse because it is not a disease. It is a habit and habits can be treated. Alcoholism, too, though it is a disease can be treated but there is always a chance of relapse. The best way to fight both alcohol abuse and alcoholism is to enter an inpatient or outpatient alcohol treatment program that supports detox and provides a structure through which to develop a strategy for living without alcohol.

How Can You Tell if Alcohol is a Problem?
There are a few different questions that can help drinkers figure out whether or not they or someone else has a problem. These include:

  • Does drinking intrude on necessary activities like work?
  • Is the amount of drinking criticized by others?
  • Is drinking done in secret?
  • Does drinking occur daily? Start early? Is a drink the only thing that cures a hangover?

If the answer is 'yes' to any of these questions, then there is a problem with alcohol that can be helped with detox and treatment.
